Defibrillators (Automated External Defibrillator or AEDs) are real lifesavers—they deliver a controlled electric shock to the heart to stop abnormal, chaotic rhythms (like ventricular fibrillation) and give the heart a chance to kick back into a normal beat. If they’re used within 3–5 minutes of a sudden cardiac arrest, survival rates can jump to around 60–70%, which is significant.
How they work
- Check the heart rhythm: The AED uses pads placed on the chest to read what the heart’s doing and calculates whether a shock is needed.
- Deliver a shock if required: If the heart’s in a “shockable” rhythm, the AED gives a jolt to help reset it.
- No guesswork needed: You can’t accidentally use it the wrong way—the AED won’t deliver a shock unless it’s actually required.
Why do they make such a difference?
- Every second counts: For each minute without defibrillation, the chances of survival drop fast—so jumping in early really matters.
- Easy for anyone to use: AEDs are designed for everyday people. They talk you through the steps with clear voice prompts, so you don’t need formal training (though a first aid course is always a good idea).
- Keeps things going till help arrives: Used alongside CPR, an AED helps keep blood and oxygen flowing to the brain and heart until the Ambulance arrives.
Research has shown that when bystanders step in and use a defibrillator, thousands of extra lives can be saved each year. It’s a good reminder that having a go in an emergency can genuinely make all the difference.
