When to use an AED (defibrillator)

Use it as soon as possible when someone:

  • is unresponsive, and
  • is not breathing normally (including gasping)

That combination strongly indicates cardiac arrest, and the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) should be applied immediately alongside Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

  • If the person has a pulse and is breathing, do NOT do CPR.
  • Keep them comfortable, call 000, and monitor them.  CPR is only for cardiac arrest.

What to do:

  1. Call 000 (or have someone else call).  (call 112 from a mobile phone anywhere in the World)
  2. Start CPR immediately (30 compressions, 2 breaths, or hands-only if unsure).
  3. Get an AED and turn it on right away.
  4. Follow the voice prompts — the device decides if a shock is needed.
  5. Continue CPR between prompts.

About safety and use:

  • AEDs are designed for bystanders or the public — you won’t “accidentally” shock someone who doesn’t need it.
  • They can be used on children and pregnant people (use pediatric pads if available).
  • Make sure the chest is dry and no one is touching the person during analysis/shock.

About the “10% per minute” rule:
It’s a useful rule of thumb, but real survival depends on multiple factors (early CPR, cause, location) every second and minute matters.

Here is a good checklist

🚑 AED + CPR Quick Checklist

1. Check

  • Is the person responsive? (tap and shout)
  • Are they breathing normally?

👉 If NO → act immediately

2. Call

  • Call 000   or 112 from a mobile phone anywhere in the World.
  • Put phone on speaker if you’re alone

3. Start CPR

  • 30 chest compressions (hard, fast — centre of chest)
  • 2 breaths (or hands-only if unsure)
  • Keep going

4. Get AED

  • Ask someone: “Get the defibrillator!”
  • If alone: grab it if nearby, otherwise keep doing CPR

5. Turn AED ON

  • Follow the voice prompts
  • Expose chest, attach pads as shown or instructed by voice

6. Stand Clear

  • Loudly say: “Clear!”
  • Don’t touch the person during analysis/shock

7. Shock if Advised

  • Press shock button if told
  • Immediately resume CPR

8. Continue

  • Follow prompts
  • Keep going until:
    • Help arrives, or
    • The person starts breathing

🧠 Easy way to remember:

Check → Call → Compress → Connect → Clear → Continue
